Rautavaara: Finland celebrates his 80th birthday

(September 2008)

October brings celebrations in Finland for the 80th birthday of its senior composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara on 9 October.

Birthday concerts are presented by leading institutions who have been closely associated with the composer, including the Helsinki and Turku Philharmonic Orchestras, Finnish Opera and the Sibelius Academy, with music conducted by leading interpreters of his output. Highlights include the Finnish premiere of Rautavaara's latest orchestral score, A Tapestry of Life, a number of works in his visionary 'Angel' series, and the recent Book of Visions.

Recording company Ondine has long been a champion of Rautavaara's music, and is releasing a new disc in honour of the 80th birthday (ODE 1125-2). The new release collects together the composer's music for male voices onto a two-CD set, including A Book of Life, Four Serenades and music linked to the operas Aleksis Kivi and Rasputin. Performers are the YL Male Voice Choir and the Talla Vocal Ensemble conducted by Matti and Pasi Hyökki.
